Indigenous Caregiving in the

Midst of Violent Colonization

Trauma accumulates across generations. In one study in Canada, they found that having one generation of family that attended residential school increased the lifetime risk for suicide ideation compared to those who didn't have family attend, and having two generations increased that risk even more. Colonial trauma still persists and could continue to accumulate resulting in children experiencing more and more mental and physical health issues. The number one resilience factor for any child is having positive supportive relationships with adults. In addition to 3 other primary factors; including culture. This training reviews epigenetic and psychological inheritance of trauma and goes over concrete action steps to build resilience in children as a parent, grandparent, aunt/ uncle, and community.
